Year 3 + 4 – Ammonite Printing Art

As part of our Rocks, Relics and Rumbles Creativity topic, we have been looking at the fossilisation process and how ammonite fossils are formed in particular.

We carefully sketched our ammonites from observing photographs and real life examples.  We then shaded them using pencil and used cross hatching in pen to give them 3D depth.

Afterwards we studied fibonacci patterns in nature, and used these as inspiration to create a simpler version of our ammonites so that we could print them.  Then, by etching our designs onto polystyrene tiles, using pencil, block paint and rollers, we made our fabulous prints using bright, contrasting colours.
